The “Can’t-Live-Without” Makeup Product

When it comes to makeup, there are a countless amount of choices on the market—high-end products and low-end products, seasonal tones and everyday basics. As a result, updating your makeup drawer can be a bit daunting.

It goes without saying that the majority of our makeup collections could likely use a good purge–containers that we’ve had just a little too long, or colors that were the “it” color last Fall—but once all the clutter is cleared, what are the “go-to” products that you just can’t live without.

Below we share our makeup favorites, and why they’ve survived our regular makeup purges.

Mere… My “Can’t-Live-Without” makeup is mascara, definitely! Mascara is my most effective makeup tool—it’s a great eye-opener that makes me look (and feel!) more awake, especially in those early weekday mornings. I’ve tried many brands over the years, but hands down my favorite is Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara. Although its higher price point ($32) makes it a bit of a beauty splurge, in my book, it’s totally worth it! This mascara leaves my lashes longer, thicker and curled throughout the day, and doesn’t clump and flake. I’m a bit traditional when it comes to makeup, so I opt for black, but it does come in fun colors (hello purple!). An added bonus is that this mascara can be found at most department store beauty counters, so it’s an easy pick-up when I’m running low.

Bri… Concealer. Currently I’m using Nyx’s Concealer Stick, which comes at an incredibly affordable price. I don’t have an all-time favorite brand, but concealer is one of my must-haves for camouflaging under-eye issues and random red spots.

Kristi…My “Can’t-Live-Without” makeup is hands-down Bare Minerals’ ORIGINAL Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15. Switching to this foundation was truly life-changing when it came to my makeup routine. The powder balances well with my complexion, giving me a balanced look with coverage that is so light, I forget that I put it on. Even better, the built-in SPF keeps my face protected when I transition from the work day to my afternoon workouts. I also dab on a smidge of their Prime Time Foundation Primer. A little goes a long way, but this keeps my foundation in place for my long weekdays.

Organizing Makeup and the Top of Your Vanity [Video]

Even though the packaging for the shiny, sparkly and matte cosmetics options available on the market today are beautiful and enticing, these days I want to put fewer products on my face and instead try to enhance my health and appearance through nutritious food and good ol’ H2O.

About 10 years ago, though, I used to put all these products on my face daily.

It was too much. I had ‘cake face’ makeup. When it rained, I would run for cover because if my face got wet it would look like a melted candle!

Since these items took up a lot of space in my tiny bathroom, I stored the multitude of products in a hanging jewelry organizer. This worked well because the products were easy to grab and easy to put away. However, the layout of the organizer was also a constant reminder of how much stuff I was applying to my face just to walk out the door. (It also took a really long time to get ready in the morning!)

Eventually, I found that I was reaching for fewer items. Happily, I put away the jewelry organizer, downsized the makeup collection and am now using a small acrylic box to sort and store the handful of items that made the cut.

Sure, I still ‘put on my face’ most mornings with a few cosmetics, but I’m confident that I won’t look like a sad clown if I get caught in a downpour. That’s a tiny win.

In my latest video, you can see how I organized my small-to-medium sized cosmetics collection. I show both ways (hanging organizer and divided box). And, you can also take a look at how I organize -and keep clean!- the top of my vanity.

Hope you found these tips helpful!
